The HEWA Teen Ball aims to give home-educated students a fun opportunity to attend an event that is often much anticipated in the typical school student’s diary. We want all young people who attend, to have a safe, fun and memorable event.

Guidelines

We have kept the guidelines simple. They are in place to ensure that all young people have a safe, enjoyable evening. Please read these out to all young people you are booking a ticket for (including plus one’s). By booking a ticket young people attending are agreeing to these guidelines.

  • The HEWA Teen Ball is a smoke, drug and alcohol-free event

I agree that I will not engage in this activity whilst at the event. If I exhibit signs of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, I will be required to leave the event.

  • The HEWA Teen Ball will be supervised by HEWA volunteers.

I understand that it is my responsibility to always remain in the premises until I am collected by a parent/guardian at the end of the evening.

  • The HEWA Teen Ball should be a safe, and inclusive space where all attending can have fun.

I understand that I should treat everyone attending with kindness and respect, and bring any problematic behaviour (i.e., bullying or harassment) to the attention of a HEWA adult volunteer if I see it occurring.

  • The HEWA Teen Ball will have a photographer present to capture all the fun. You are also welcome to take photos of yourself and your friends.

I understand that I need to be mindful that not everyone wants to have their photo taken and especially may not agree to have this distributed on social media. I agree to seek consent of others before taking their photo.

Frequently asked questions

What if my home-school student doesn’t meet the age criteria?

If your child is under the age of 13 on the 5th of November 2022 then they are not eligible to attend. As it is a teen ball, there will be many more opportunities for them to attend this event in the future.

There will be a small number of home-educated students who are still in year 12 but have already turned 18. They are eligible to attend.

If your home-educated student wants to bring a ‘plus one’, i.e., sibling or friend that goes to school or a partner they must also meet the age requirements, if they are 18 or over, this will need to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Please contact coordinator@hbln.org.au to discuss this before booking a ticket.

What is included in the ticket price?

The ticket price includes a five-hour event, with a three-course meal, a mocktail on arrival and unlimited soft drinks, as well as a lolly bar, photo booth, and DJ for the night. It also covers the costs of ‘less exciting’ but necessary expenses such as insurance.

What if I have dietary requirements

The three-course menu will cover standard dietary options such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. If you have additional needs (i.e., allergies) please indicate this on the form when you book your tickets. It is unlikely that we will be able to accommodate preferences (not allergies) outside of those listed above but we will ask the venue. If you have any questions about these, please contact coordinator@hbln.org.au

What if I have access needs?

The venue is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet. We want this event to be fun and inclusive for all young people who attend, so if you have any access and inclusion needs that you think we need to be aware of, please let us know on the form below and we will be in contact.

What safety measures have been put in place?

We have put several measures in place to make this event as safe as possible for the young people attending. All HEWA volunteers will have a valid Working With Children Check. There will be identified first aiders available on the night and we will keep an emergency contact register on hand on the night (please complete this when booking your ticket).

We have secured exclusive use of the venue, so the only people in attendance will be those who have booked a ticket, the volunteers and staff.

We have outlined guidelines above to keep young people safe and we ask that parents/guardians ensure all young people who are attending agree to abide by these. If any young people on the night breach these, then a parent/guardian will be called to come and pick their child (and their plus-one) up.

Can I sit with my friends?

We want all young people who attend to have fun and feel comfortable. When you book a ticket, you can nominate other attendees that your child would ideally like to share a table with. Please list their full name so we can try to match them up. As you can imagine, we will be dealing with large numbers of bookings and are a volunteer team, so not all preferences may be able to be accommodated. We will aim to ensure that every attendee is seated with at least one person that they know. There will also be plenty of opportunities through the evening for the young people to mingle on the dance floor.

What if I can’t attend or get COVID and am in isolation?

Once you book a ticket this is not refundable. We have deliberately tried to keep costs as low as possible, which means that we are unlikely to have much of a margin that would enable us to refund tickets.

If you want to pass your ticket on to someone else, you may be able to do this but it needs to be organised with HEWA ahead of time so that we can ensure the person attending in your place meets the criteria for attendance and understands the guidelines.

If you are not able to attend last minute due to COVID isolation (or other sickness or unexpected event), and we find we do have a financial margin in which we can refund your ticket we will explore this with you.
